Cyclone Insurance Review Puts Northern Tradie Risks in Focus

Why weather-exposed contractors should revisit policy limits, exclusions and cash-flow protection

A fresh review of Australia’s cyclone reinsurance pool has put insurance access and affordability back in the spotlight for communities and small businesses across northern Australia.
The pool was designed to reduce pressure on premiums for cyclone and cyclone-related flood damage by giving insurers access to government-backed reinsurance.
For tradies working in exposed regions, the review is more than an industry policy exercise; it is a reminder to check whether day-to-day business risks are properly covered before the next storm season arrives.

The pool is aimed mainly at eligible household, strata and small business property insurance in cyclone-prone areas. That can matter for trade businesses with workshops, sheds, offices, stock, materials or fixed equipment in affected regions. However, it does not automatically solve every insurance gap a contractor may face after a major weather event.

A cyclone or severe storm can create several separate problems for a tradie. Tools may be damaged in a shed, a ute may be written off, materials may be ruined on site, access roads may close, and booked work may be delayed for weeks. Some of those losses may sit under property cover, while others may require commercial motor, general property, contract works, business interruption or other sections. Public-facing work may also keep public liability insurance front and centre if damaged sites become unsafe or emergency repairs are rushed.

The practical message is to avoid assuming that a headline change in the insurance market will flow neatly into every policy. Tradies should review:

  • whether cyclone, storm surge, flood and water damage definitions match the real risks at their location;
  • where tools, portable equipment, plant and materials are covered, including while in transit or on site;
  • whether policy sub-limits are high enough for current replacement costs;
  • how long the business could survive if income stopped after a major weather event;
  • what evidence would be needed for a claim, such as photos, receipts, asset registers and job records.

This is also a good time to revisit sums insured. Replacement costs for vehicles, generators, specialised tools, scaffolding, electrical gear and building materials can move quickly, especially after regional disasters when demand spikes. Underinsurance can leave a business funding the shortfall at the worst possible time. Tools that help owners assess sums insured and limits can provide a useful starting point before comparing policy options.

For sole traders and small crews, the goal is not to buy every possible add-on. It is to understand what would actually stop work, what would cost the most to replace, and which policy sections respond. The cyclone pool review may shape future pricing and availability, but the immediate action for tradies is clear: check the wording, update values and make sure weather risk is built into the broader trades insurance cover conversation.
